I wasn't lying to you; this wasn't posted when I sent you that message. I drew these things while attending the artist's reception for my fine friend (and a very fine artist) Justin Devine at the local Cafe Lumiere. This is, of course, largely inspired by my recent completion of Dan Simmons' excellent novel The Terror, which is easily one of my favorite books I have ever read. Did you know that the original spelling of " Eskimo" is " Esquimaux?" It's from French, and the archaic spelling is used by H.P. Lovecraft in several of his short fictions, as well as in The Terror. I think this is a much cooler spelling, even if the proper term is "Inuit." I also picked up today a copy of Herland, The Yellow Wall-Paper, and Selected Writings by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. "The Yellow Wall-Paper" is, as my friend Cole already knows, one of my favorite short stories; classic turn-of-the-century feminist fiction with a bit of psychological horror thrown in for good measure. The "selected writings" include a selection of CPG's incredibly polarized feminist poetry. One day, I shall make a pilgrimage to Pasadena, Califronia, where she shot herself in 1935. Actually, I probably won't--but it's a thought, at least.Current Location: Monterey Current Mood: Chocolate Current Music: Grizzly Bear - Yellow House
